What Happens When You Don’t Find The Purpose Of Your Life?
In our daily life, we come across people who often complain about them not knowing their purpose in life. Now the question arises that what is the purpose of life? Is it something generic and means the same to everyone? Or is it something that has a different meaning to different people? Does knowing your purpose of life have some implications on your life?
In this article, we will discuss the implications of not knowing your purpose and what you can do about it.
What Does The Purpose Of Life Means?
“It is not enough to have lived. We should be determined to live for something.”- Winston S. Churchill
Defining the purpose of life may be a bit complicated. There are two main schools of thought regarding the meaning of “Purpose of Life”. Some argue that life does not have an intrinsic purpose and is a subjective matter, so we have to develop our own purpose of life. On the contrary, others believe in the fundamental purpose of our existence, but they differ on the exact same purpose of our life. According to a renowned Persian poet Saadi,
“Every being is intended to be on earth for a certain purpose.”
The purpose of life does not necessarily have any connection with one’s profession or lifestyle. For instance, a person may become a doctor so that he can serve humanity, while another person may become a doctor to earn lots and lots of money. To some people, their purpose of life will be to build a successful career, while to some it may mean to have a happy, successful, and respectable family life.
Your purpose of life may drive your day to day decisions, gives you a sense of direction, satisfaction, impact your behaviour, and define your priorities.
“The purpose of life is not to be happy. It is to be useful, to be honourable, to be compassionate, to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well.” ― Ralph Waldo Emerson
People who feel inclined towards something they think can be their purpose of life, but they do not follow or fulfil it, leading to dissatisfaction. However, it should be kept in mind not to confuse happiness with purpose.
Happiness is the emotion that you experience in the day-by-day stream of life – the highs and lows that are situational. Whereas, Purpose is a more significant amount of a basic feeling of harmony and satisfaction, generally speaking, a feeling of combination and consistent unfoldment of your being.
It rises above common good and bad times, the mistake or triumphs, even. At the point when you’re living as per your life’s motivation, you see the entirety of the above as a component of what you experience along the street. They don’t divert you from that bigger vision, your ideal, which resembles a magnet consistently pulling you towards it.
What Happens When You Don’t Find The Purpose Of Your Life?
Everything in this universe has its purpose in any form of life and even a natural phenomenon. However, we human beings have got so caught up in our day-to-day life routine that we don’t even pay attention towards our actual purpose of life.
A person may establish a successful business or have a great career where he/ she can earn a lot, but at the same time, there will be some kind of emptiness in his/ her life, and that will be the hollowness of not knowing the purpose of their life.
They may keep on working like robots or machines, making money, making progress in their business or their career, but they will feel that something is missing in their life and that missing piece will be not knowing the Purpose of their life.
The implication of not finding your life’s purpose is like a nightmare, a nightmare that leads to dissatisfaction, absence of inner peace. Why is that so? Because you do not have a sense of direction, a direction towards your purpose of life.
I have come across a lot of people, successful people, top-notch in their own fields who are not satisfied with their life despite living a life one can dream of. These people end up doing psychotherapies or reach out to religious or spiritual scholars to attain inner peace or to discover their true purpose of life. As Eckhart Tolle said,
“Whenever you become anxious or stressed, outer purpose has taken over, and you lost sight of your inner purpose. You have forgotten that your state of consciousness is primary, all else secondary.”
Why Knowing The Purpose Of Life Is Important?
“The mystery of human existence lies not in just staying alive, but in finding something to live for.” – Fyodor Dostoyevsky
All of our lives, we keep asking ourselves on and on that why are we sent to this world and what is our purpose of life? As Rumi said, “What you Seek is seeking You” There are innumerable reasons why it is vital to know the purpose of life. One of reasons might be related to religion or philosophy. Following are some of the ways through which we can determine our purpose of life.
Realizing your Potential
It is very important for a person to know his/her capability or potential as each and every one of us has our own potential. How can a person know his/her true potential?
Self-exploration and a person’s desires may lead to the answer of this question. Every single individual is born with natural talents; based on natural talents, we can explore our life’s purpose and what we desire the most from our lives. It is one of the best ways to find yourself through life, in other words, what we call soul searching.
Passions of Life
Let your passions be your purpose of life. You will enjoy your life when your passions would be your purpose of life. For some people, a high-paid salary would be their purpose of life, while some people just enjoy their work because it’s their life’s true purpose or their life’s desire. Thus, your desire or passion should be aligned with your purpose of life; otherwise, you will lose the meaning of your life.
Once you find a career that you love and you are surrounded by people who share the same passions and desires as you, it takes you to the height of success and prosperity in contrast to having a career that brings you a lot of money but does not give you inner peace.
“The purpose of life is to live it, to taste experience to the utmost, to reach out eagerly and without fear for a newer and richer experience.”― Eleanor Roosevelt
A person can create his/ her own meaning of life. Life may not be as perfect or flawless, but why not enjoy it by doing what you enjoy or like doing the most. And doing the things you love the most or following your dreams often leads people to the road to success.
Once you find the meaning of life, your life has a direction, a path in which you fulfil your desires and achieve your passions. When you find the purpose of your life, you are filled with energy, passion, and excitement that drives your whole day and you sleep peacefully without worrying about anything.
People who don’t live their purpose of life, they are actually dragging their life, and they need weekends to relax from the bored and unexcited life while compared to the people who enjoy their daily life and wait for the weekend to end and a new week with a burst of energy and excitement.
Making a Difference in the World
When you know the purpose of your life, you will be compelled to give back to the world and contribute to the world, which will be the true difference. Whatever you do will provide you with a sense of accomplishment.
I have once come across a wealthy successful businessman, who found his inner peace in the art of giving to the underprivileged, to those who could not afford to meet their ends. This is what happens when you find your true self, the purpose of your life.
“The purpose of life is to contribute in some way to making things better.” ― Robert F. Kennedy
Your Relationships Will Flourish And Grow Strong
Without discovering the purpose of your life, you cannot reach your full potential. You will feel incomplete and will grow frustrated that something is missing. This will not just affect your professional relationships but also your personal relationship with your friends and family.
Those who find their purpose of life are no longer self-centered or focused only towards own interests. Giving up on self-interest or on being selfish opens up new avenues for new relationships and makes the existing relationships even stronger.
According to a study, a thousand adults who had meaning in their respective lives were more likely to spend time with their families and loved ones. They gave them more attention and love.
Physical Health & Mental Wellbeing
“Whenever you become anxious or stressed, outer purpose has taken over, and you lost sight of your inner purpose. You have forgotten that your state of consciousness is primary, all else secondary.” ― Eckhart Tolle
Knowing the purpose of life will give you more control over your life, a sense of satisfaction, and inner peace by eliminating any stress that is not just important for mental wellbeing but also for physical fitness.
If your life has fulfilment and if you feel content, it will give you mental peace that will, in turn give you a longer life. According to a study conducted in 2009 of 73,000 Japanese men and women; concluded that people who had a strong relation with their purpose of life tend to have a longer life than those who did not.
How to Find Your Purpose of Life?
For centuries Psychologists are searching for the purpose of life. The purpose of life lies in the meaning of life, the meaning of life is associated with the goals of an individual’s life. The goals of life tend to change the entire life of a person. The goals may include opening up an organization, setting up your business, researching new and innovative solutions, teaching someone to read and write, etc.
A human being has to have a purpose in life; otherwise, they will be lost and isolated for the rest of their life. According to studies, as a society or community, a person can achieve a lot, and that is why it is directly related to physical and mental well-being. A purpose is an evolutionary process that changes with the course of time and condition. It helps people to grow and prosper.
Every individual is bound to have some unique gifts, and these gifts often make you different from others and become the purpose of life. It is essential to know your strength and weaknesses, getting to know about your strengths drive you to the right path and takes you to the high road of success while knowing your weaknesses helps you overcome the milestones in life.
For some people, life’s purpose may be related to religion; spirituality guides them through their way of life and gives them purpose, while for some, it may be a philosophical thing. In short, for every individual, it may vary. According to some scientists, our mere existence might be our purpose of life.
Meaning and Purpose are directly related to one another but exist separately scientifically. Meaning has a much broader perspective, while Purpose comes out of Meaning. The meaning may also be related to sense of value, self-worth and usefulness. Finding your meaning or purpose of life is also termed as soul searching, which means exploring yourself inside out.
When you have a clear purpose of life, you will be able to set clear goals, and to achieve those goals; you will be able to draw or strategize clear plans that will drive your day to day activities. So, everything you do is linked with each other.
“Decide upon your major definite purpose in life and then organize all your activities around it.” — Brian Tracy
Some Guidelines To Help You Find The Purpose Of Life
When you cannot find the purpose of your life, you should follow the following guidelines that will help you find the purpose of life:
- While being alone, grab a pen and paper or a computer (whichever suits you) and start writing about whatever comes into your mind regarding your purpose of life. Your ultimate goal should be to reach a conclusion or to find the answer, “What is my Purpose of Life?”. Keep pushing till you find the answer.
- If you cannot find the answer, look into your current life, current situation, what you are currently doing. Look into your past, what you could have done if you did not make a certain choice. You need to look into yourself, reach your soul, discover who you truly are.
- We often wear a mask for the society—a mask of deception that we are not. In order to get along with the society and the current trends, we are compelled to wear that mask and give up on who we truly are. In order to find your true self, you have to be honest to yourself and remove the mask. Be truthful to yourself.
- Write about the things that give you satisfaction, inner peace, happiness, sense of accomplishment.
- Keep on writing until you reach to a conclusion and find the answer you are looking for about the purpose of your life.
You might not be able to reach a conclusion at once and might feel tired or your mind will get blocked, so do not push yourself, take a break. Do it again when you are at peace.
Now the question is that how will you know that this is my purpose of life? Or is this the answer to my question? According to psychologists, when you reach to the conclusion, you will feel a strong connection, a strong energy that might be so overwhelming that will lead to tears.
“You were put on this earth to achieve your greatest self, to live out your purpose, and to do it courageously.” Steve Maraboli
Once you find your life’s purpose, you should work towards that with all your energy and effort. This path might not be easy, you might face difficulties and obstacles, but you have to stay determined and stay on the path to achieve your purpose of life.
Keeping in view the difficulties in the path, Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote:
“Whatever course you decide upon, there is always someone to tell you that you are wrong. There are always difficulties arising that tempt you to believe that your critics are right. To map out a course of action and follow it to an end requires courage.”
